Space Chimps is an upcoming computer animated movie produced by Vanguard Animation that should be released in July 18, 2008.

The plot:
"When a $5 billion NASA probe disappears into an intergalactic wormhole, the agency recruits Ham III (Andy Samberg), grandson of the first chimpanzee in space, to help retrieve the wayward craft. But Ham is a free-spirited circus performer more interested in zero gravity high jinks than living up to his illustrious heritage. The simian slacker becomes a reluctant hero and learns the true meaning of courage as he and his crewmates, the fearless Lt. Luna (Cheryl Hines) and their uptight commander, Titan (Patrick Warburton), risk everything in an effort to save the peaceful inhabitants of a distant planet from the evil dictator Zartog (Jeff Daniels)." Space Chimps in July 2008
The story of this animated is based on chimps. But the chimps were not the real space pioneers of the monkey kind!

Actually the space pioneers were rhesus monkeys: their services were used because rhesus monkeys are quite small and a not so bad model for comparison with human reactions.

In the next 100 years the man in the street may join the monkeys and privileged astronauts with the rise of commercial space flight. Let's just hope I won't be dead by then...
